A nine-year old Congolese boy called Paul was found wandering in Garamba National Park this week after being held captive by the LRA for a month.
Paul, along with 30 other women and children, were controlled by nine LRA militants who forced the nine-year-old to learn how to use a gun. Garamba scouts escorted Paul to a local hospital to undergo health checks before he was reunited with his family. The young boy also provided Garamba’s rangers with information about LRA poaching activities in the park.
In the past two years, 14 children who escaped from the LRA have been found by Garamba scouts in and around the park, however many more children are still being held captive in the region. The LRA, led by wanted fugitive Joseph Kony, is responsible for widespread human rights violations, including the murder, rape and abduction of children, who they turn into child soldiers and sex slaves.
